With more people carrying plastic instead of cash there have arisen a few problems in the way people are doing business. Some stores will not accept these credit cards because of the premium that they are charged for doing so by the credit card companies. Others will add on fee to the total cost of the purchase price to offset the fees they pay but at the cost of customers. However, these are all a necessary evil now with the advent of debit cards.
Debit cards, as most people know, take the money directly from your bank account. This means that you are not running a credit line with a particular company and have secured funds. However, all debit cards are also issued by the major credit card companies and, as a result, are generally accepted everywhere that a credit card is.
Though they don’t necessarily like to, all car rental companies will accept a debit card in lieu of a credit card. This is because they will still have all the information they need to charge you should the car become irreparably damaged or if there is a breach in the rental contract on your part. However, there are a few things that you need to remember when using a debit card instead of a credit card.
First, the rental company will more than likely put a hold on a predetermined amount of money in your account. It is important that you remember to have at least that much and enough to live on for two weeks in there before you use your debit card to rent a car. Another issue is that they will often want a cash deposit (fully refundable) of up to $1,000 before they allow you to drive off the lot.
